A SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on March 1 successfully launched two telecommunications satellites destined for geostationary orbit – the first dual-geostationary launch for Falcon 9, which inaugurated a new all-electric satellite design from Boeing.
The coinage all-electric satellite is misleading marketing hyperbole. Eliminating the bi-propellant chemical propulsion system doesn’t make the spacecraft all-electric. The 702SP’s ion engine uses electric fields to accelerate Xenon gas ions — a consumable propellant.
Call me when you’ve actually implemented a propellant-less propulsion system. I’ll send your name to Sweden.
